Newcastle University (UON) is one of the top 10 Universities in Australia with over 37,000 students.

Challenge

UON is fully committed to sustainability and aims to position itself as an example of an ecologically and socially sustainable community. UON’s Environmental and Sustainability Plan outlines the university’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025. Apart from large scale projects, they wanted to bring the idea of sustainability into everyday student experience.

Solution

The solar-powered Smart Benches, with solar panels visible to everyone, were the perfect choice and tangible evidence of UON’s sustainability efforts. 10 Smart Benches were installed in most prominent places across UON campus. The Smart Benches helped them position as a sustainable campus committed to reducing CO2 emissions, while at the same time answering to new needs of today’s mobile generations – WiFi and mobile device changing.
